Survey in UBD

From the movie Mountain Patrol and the documentary "Home" we learnt that that there is a great need for all of us to conserve the environment and reduce greenhouse effects which cause climatic changes. On Monday 14th Sept 2009 we (Syahir & Malek) were asked to experience a community action at the UBD to reduce greenhouse gases through Electricity use at UBD. So our task was to survey the building and area allocated to us which is at the UBD library.

I thought it is about a family or something, well after a few time watching the documentary then I found out how remarkable this documentary is. It talks about the linkage of life from the past until the present. Life exists between 4 billion years ago. Ironically, human existence is only 200 thousand year. In between these 4 billion years, the world that we live in keeps on varying.
It starts with the creation and the evolution of the animal species in the Earth, until the human, who starts living peacefully with nature. However, it accelerate three times the growth of population in the last 60 years and discover of the oil, changed all.
As the human growth accelerates, civilization occurs. Not only have that people struggling for food it cause the multiplication number of food. The daily concern is to feed ourselves (human), shaping the land by sacrificial activities (deforestation).
This documentary Shot in 54 countries and 120 locations over 217 days, Home presents the many wonders of planet Earth from an aerial perspective. When the documentary was release, it was on the same day in over 50 countries to mark the global event. The filmmaker is a French director Arthus Bertrand, he illustrate a tale of how human upset the balance of Earth. By looking in this documentary we can realize how important to change our bad habit to the earth which is currently deteriorating.

Mountain Patrol: Kekexili

It is a real story and made into a film to show the remarkable mission of the illegal Tibetan antelope poaching in the region of Kekexili, the largest animal reserve in China. It tells the tale of a brave local Tibetan who face his death and starvation in order to save the endangered antelope herds from a band of coldblooded hunters. The set is next to the backdrop of Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau.

For the past 20 years, the antelope's number has been dwindling significantly, as many poachers tend to slaughter the animals and often hundreds at a time. Hunters hunt for the antelope skins, which is luxurious. In 1990, local Tibetans formed a voluntary patrol trying to stop illegal poaching and sometimes cost their lives.

The antelope makes many footprints at their breeding ground making them easier to catch. In the film, it shows a field hundreds of antelope remains near a lake. The patrol officers have to bury 10,000 antelope a year.

The air at kekexili is so thin that any kind of exertion is a hazard, and the place is so remote that even the smallest miscalculation can put you at grave risk of your life in the middle of nowhere.
It also illustrate the social changes whereby many of the young adults are unemployed, women become prostitutes, which is against Tibetans ancient religious and culture.
When this become a crisis, the government responds is by establishing the area as a nature reserve and send considerable agents to track down the poachers. The result is that there are now some 30,000 Himalayans antelope, increasing in numbers thanks to successful law enforcement.
